Smocked sweater and book review /

Hello, I am back with a hand-knitted item!

This was a very quick knit. I finished it in less than a month which is record breaking for me^^

smocked5

The pattern came from a Japanese knitting book. I love the smocked high neck so much, and knew I wanted to make it the moment I saw it!

smocked1

It was rather simple to knit – just purl for the lower halves of the front, the back and the sleeves, connect the parts together and make smocking.

smocked2

It did take me a lot longer than it should have, because I made many mistakes (due to not paying attention to the instructions). Since I made the mistakes, my balls of yarns were already connected when I started knitting again, and the knots tying the yarns together all ended up in the middle of the sweater (there are about 3)! They are kind of visible… so I really wish I took the time to make sure the knots are hidden on the sides even if it meant cutting and losing a bit of yarn to do so.

smocked3

As you can see the sleeves are a bit of a bell-shape, and actually they are longer than I had anticipated!  On the model photograph of the pattern, they are of 3/4 length, but on me they are almost full-length… and I have long arms.

The beautiful smockings…❤️

The garter stitch rows at the ends of the sleeves and the body are a bit of a nice detail.

The yarn I used is Lana Grossa Cool Wool Merino Big (worsted weight). Please visit my Ravelry project details if you are interested in information on needle size etc.

Here is a bit about the book I used, “Knitting: Fun to Knit” by Saichika, released this autumn.

The smocked sweater is on the cover!

Here are some of my favourites:

Cardigans are always useful!

smocked14

This would make a good pattern for a nice simple winter marinière top:-)

smocked16

Fair Isle cardigan and hat. I would love to try making a colourful Fair-Isle patterned item one day… though it looks so intimidating with all the colors >_<

smocked17

Cozy cardigan with buttons at back

smocked19

I think this shawl with strawberry motif is so cute!

smocked20

I like both of these patterns, though the white sweater seems like something I have seen before.

smocked21

Elegant bicolor waffle cardigan seems useful for both casual and dressy occasions.

smocked22

There are quite a few oversized or bat-wing items in this book but I guess that is the trend these days. I like this book a lot and would probably come back to make another one or more of these items, though I haven’t decided which one yet.

Right now I am working on Ondawa but progress is going reallllllly slow because it is complicated so I have to look at the pattern for every row I knit!

Do you generally prefer challenging patterns such as the Ondawa, for which you can enjoy the process for a lonnng time, possibly saving money on your hobby because yarn purchases last longer, or do you prefer simpler patterns, that you can read/watch TV while knitting and can wear sooner because you knit it faster?

みなさんはどのタイプのパターンが好きですか。私は、達成感をすぐ味わえる簡単な方がいいかも^^;

  1. Beautiful! Your sweater looks so good on you – how could you tell from this simple picture on the cover? This book features many great styles. Let me know if it gets translated into French or English.

As for your question about simple vs. complicated knitting, I always have two projects going on: one for the car or the subway (usually socks because it is small and always the same) and one more serious for knitting at home (usually a sweater or a hat). Both projects are moving forward in parallel very slowly, but I usually finished all of them!

    1. Thank you Hélène, and I am happy to hear from you! I haven’t seen many Japanese knitting books translated to other languages, hopefully there will be more, but the Japanese knitting books I have came across use graphical knitting charts, so I think it will take time at first to decipher but can get most of the instructions without reading any text.

That’s a great idea to have two projects, that way one can choose the “relaxing” project and the “challenging” project depending on mood as well as the location:-)
