Jersey Journal #1: Little Black Dress

It’s been awhile since my last post – sewing has taken a back seat in the last few months. To ease back into sewing, I decided to make some easy and quick patterns using jersey.

First up is Burda Style 6910, a close-fitting t-shirt and dress pattern with gathers on the side and raglan sleeves.

The gathers are great for camouflaging the belly in this otherwise tight dress:-)

There were only 4 pieces to trace and cut (back, front, raglan sleeve, and neck band). The gathers are made by sewing a piece of elastic on the inside of each side.

I used an interesting fabric from my stash which is a mesh linen knit on one side and a regular jersey knit on the other side. It is perhaps a little light for this pattern. I can see this pattern beautifully made up with a slightly heavier jersey with some sheen, perhaps in a raspberry red. Anyway, I am happy with this version using my stash:-)

The review I read on this pattern is that the size runs a little large, so I cut a size 34, with no changes. I kept the length as is. The whole thing from cutting into the fabric to finishing took around 2.5 hours. I made it using the zigzag stich on a regular sewing machine, with a double-knit needle for the hems.

Very happy with the result! The T-shirt version looks handy for fitness wear and for making tops to wear under jackets, too.

Thank you for reading:-)
